The Hand That Feeds U.S. Announces Photo Contest Winners

Washington, DC (June 24)-Meet the winners of our Farm Foto Contest! Allison Boggs, Kimberly Crawford, and Kayla Ferris beat out more than 100 other farm photographers to take first, second, and third place, respectively, in the first-ever Hand That Feeds U.S. photo competition. We took some time to chat with each of them to find out the stories behind their winning photographs.

Allison Boggs, 1st Place
Little Helper
Allison, of Martin, South Dakota, snapped "Little Helper" at the Mosher Ranch where she and her family live. Allison's husband, Chris, works on the ranch, and their one-and-a-half year old, Cassie, loves to help him. On a snowy December day last year, Cassie joined her dad to check on the cattle, prompting Allison to capture the special moment between father and daughter. Our judges loved adorable little Cassie in her pink snowsuit holding Chris's hand, not to mention the beauty of the ranch covered in snow. This wonderful photo captures the importance of teaching our farming techniques to the next generation.

Kimberly Crawford, 2nd Place
Playful
Kimberly took "Playful" at Hill Country Farm, a small operation that raises cows and pigs near her hometown of Tyler, Texas. Kimberly, who loves photography and has taken courses at her local college, calls the farm one of her favorite places to visit. She took this particular photo last March, and the young calf pictured had recently been weaned from his mother. According to Kimberly, "he was letting everyone know how he felt about the separation!" She added that she is extremely honored to have been chosen as a contest winner, because a photo does not have life sitting in an archive and only comes alive when others can see it.

Kayla Ferris, 3rd Place
Farming for Our Future
Kayla grew up on a farm and continues to love the country way of life. She took "Farming for our Future" three years ago on the 1,700-acre corn and wheat farm in Dalhart, Texas where she and her husband, Gabe, live and work with their two (soon to be three) daughters-Bria (4) and Adalyn (19 months). Gabe often goes out to the fields to check out the crop as it grows, and Bria (pictured in the photo at age one-and-a-half) loves to join him. Kayla enjoys experimenting with different photo programs and decided to bring out the green in this particular photo in order to place the focus on agriculture.
